Assigment #2

Cormac McCarthy The Road is a Novel based on the up and down experiences of a father and son living in a post-apocalyptic world. The father protects his son through their journey and teaches him to stay strong in dark and depressing times. Furthermore, the conclusion of the novel brings the demise of the father who leaves his son with teachings of respect, confidence, and a non giving up attitude. Both characters have to rely on each other , However the boy dependence on his father is more essential that's why the father  would do anything to protect him but also stays aware that death cant be an option."That the boy was all that stood between him and death." (Pg. 29) With time the boy will realize why his life means so much to his father. Even though death is inalienable the father still has the burden to be a father and a mentor. "If you break little promises you'll break big ones. that's what you said."(pg.34) The boy is already showing signs of maturity at his young age. The father understands that eventually the boy will know enough to take care of himself and it can be inferred that the father is realizing that he is now being reminded by his own son teachings he thought him and understands that his boy is growing up faster than typical kids do. "You have to carry the fire... Its inside you. it was always there. I can see it." (Pg. 278-279) With death arriving soon the father must give his son words of inspiration for future events. The boy must stay strong and remember everything he was thought to stay inspired to move on with his life. The son eventually finds a group to join, however, he carries his fathers words fresh in his mind and will never forget them. The relationship of both main characters is a typical father and son relationship in which the father takes care his son and shows him how to be a men and in a post- apocalyptic world he thought him how to stay alive with emotional strength.
